Reading strategies: Your child knows these! Sometimes I see that children tend to try "sounding it out" over & over again, even if it doesn't help them figure out the word. The truth is, "sounding out" only helps less than 50% of the time. Children need to use the other strategies when that doesn't work. We tend to want to rescue them when they're stuck, and tell them what the word is. That doesn't teach them how to decode, or figure out difficult words, though. It causes children to rely on others to help them, and the truth is, you or I will not be there to rescue them all the time when they are reading. So if your child is stuck, please be patient and give him/her time to think. Ask: "What else can you try?"
