Pictured above is the gathering area and classroom library.
We "publish" our writing here. At the end of each writing unit, we have a celebration in which the children share their stories. They like to put their stories on the document camera and read them to the class.
Our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees
This is the supply station so children can get supplies they need independently, without having to interrupt instruction or depend on the teacher.
Student portfolios and individual book baskets. Students read independently for 15-20 minutes during reading workshop. This picture was taken in the beginning of school before the children were taught "book shopping" procedures. Now, every basket is full of "just right books" each student has chosen himself.
The Listening Center
This is our "Clip chart" (behavior chart)
This work station management board is used to let students choose their literacy center in the mornings during reading workshop. In the afternoon, I assign centers when I work with a guided reading group.
In addition to our classroom library/ gathering area, we have other selections based on theme, or author, or interest.
